How this is worked out
Redundancy pay follows the National Employment Standards: 4 weeks after 1 year of service, rising to 16 weeks at 9 years, then 12 weeks from 10 years. It is paid at your base rate for ordinary hours, without overtime, bonuses or allowances.
Notice is 1 week for up to 1 year of service, 2 weeks up to 3 years, 3 weeks up to 5 years and 4 weeks after that, plus 1 week if you're 45 or older with at least 2 years' service.
You usually get no NES redundancy pay with less than 12 months' service, as a casual, on a fixed-term contract, as an apprentice or trainee, if dismissed for serious misconduct, or if your employer has fewer than 15 employees. Your award or agreement may give you more.
For a genuine redundancy in 2026–27, up to $13,598 plus $6,801 for each completed year of service is tax-free. Anything above that is taxed as an employment termination payment. Notice pay and leave are taxed as ordinary income.
